Vietnam striker Phuong among those to watch in AFC Champions League


The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has chosen Nguyen Cong Phuong as one of the players to watch in the 2022 AFC Champions League, alongside other stars.

Six players selected by the AFC are Phuong, Spanish midfielder Andres Iniesta of J1 League club Vissel Kobe, Thai midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin, Australian midfielder Mathew Leckie, Japanese midfielder Jun Amano and the Montenegrin striker Dejan Damjanovic, the most prolific goalscorer in AFC history. “Still just 27, Vietnamese striker Nguyen Cong Phuong can tick off Japan, South Korea and Belgium as destinations on his footballing journey, but his AFC Champions League debut will come with the club he plays with. his career started at the age of 12. : Hoang Anh Gia Lai,” the AFC wrote.

Phuong made his debut for HAGL in 2015 before loan spells at Japanese club Mito HollyHock, Incheon United in South Korea and Belgian club Sint Truiden.

“Having scored in the 2020 AFC Cup, Cong Phuong will be looking to add to his tally in the first leg of the confederation clubs,” the site added.

HAGL is Vietnam’s only representative in the ACL this year. The club are in Group H with South Korean champions Jeonbuk Huyndai and Australian club Sydney FC. All Group H matches will be held in Ho Chi Minh City. The first match between HAGL and Yokohama will take place on April 16.
